Professional Turbo Solution for D-Max/MU-X 4JJ1 (2016-Onwards) Turbo Failures
As a professional turbo builder based in Australia with over 10 years of experience, we've built and repaired thousands of turbos. One of the most common issues we've encountered in recent years is with the factory turbos on Isuzu D-Max and MU-X vehicles equipped with the 4JJ1 engine (2016 onwards).
Many owners of these vehicles have experienced premature turbo failure—some even reporting up to four turbo replacements under warranty from Isuzu. A typical symptom begins with a loud whining noise, followed by complete turbo failure. While some speculate the cause to be weak bearings or issues with the VNT (Variable Nozzle Turbine) mechanism, our extensive testing and research have revealed the real culprit.
The core issue is excessive carbon buildup in the exhaust system. This buildup can cause the VNT mechanism to become sticky or notchy, leading it to get stuck in either under-boost or over-boost conditions. These erratic boost levels place extreme stress on the turbo, ultimately causing failure.
Several solutions have been attempted, including fitting the later-model turbo with modifications—but these often come at a high cost without guaranteed long-term results.
After thorough development and testing, we discovered the key issue lies in the factory 11-blade turbine wheel. This design is highly restrictive and creates a narrow passage for exhaust gases, which significantly contributes to carbon buildup around the VNT mechanism.
We are proud to introduce our Hybrid 9-Blade Turbine Wheel, specifically engineered to resolve this issue. The new design allows exhaust gases to exit more freely, reducing back pressure, minimizing carbon buildup, and ensuring more reliable VNT operation. This upgrade not only improves turbo longevity but also enhances overall engine performance and response.
